The Mental Health Library supports excellence in the
educational, research, clinical, and administrative
functions of Eastern State Hospital through the acquisition,
organization, and dissemination of information.
The library assures access to the most current
and evidence-based biomedical and clinical resources,
and provides services in an environment that
promotes
effective research and study.
Collection The library collection contains 1,500 books and over 80 journal subscriptions totaling over 3,538 volumes, plus 1,300 audiovisual items and 8 computer databases. Its scope includes basic and biomedical sciences, psychiatry, psychology, psychiatric nursing, clinical medicine and consumer health care. The online catalog can be searched by author, title, subject, or keyword, and gives the location of materials. Books are shelved by Library of Congress classification scheme.
The Reference Collection contains directories, dictionaries, handbooks. Basic psychiatric textbooks,internal medicine, nursing, psychology, and medical texts. Reference materials can be checked out overnight only.

Special Collection
The John Galt Library consisting of 130 books and artifacts dating back to the early 1800’s.
The library's primary clientele are the staff at Eastern State Hospital, and personnel throughtout the state who are affiliated with the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS).
The Mental Health Library’s mission is to meet the informational needs of the health care staff of Eastern State Hospital, the clients and persons whose lives are affected by mental illness, mental retardation and substance abuse. |
