The Past: The Moon Kingdom

*This is the story from the original Sailor Moon manga by Kodansha (although some pictures are from the anime). The anime version of the story is a little different. I use "Serenity" as the queen's name, and "Selenity" as the princess's name just because it is easier to keep them apart, but in actuality they had the same name, Selenity.*

Far back, in the time called The Silver Millenium, there was a race of immortal beings who lived on the Moon. All the planets in the Galaxy were at peace with one another and together they were known as the Moon Kingdom. This period of peace lasted 1000 years.

Queen Serenity ruled over the entire Moon Kingdom from her palace on the moon. She had a young daughter named Princess Selenity. Selenity had four sailor guardians who composed her court, ruled over their respected planets, and protected Selenity: Princess Venus, Princess Mercury, Princess Mars, and Princess Jupiter.

Princess Selenity was the heiress to the Moon Kingdom, and was learning to become a lady and how to rule from her mother. However, most of Selenity's time was spent at her window, staring at the bright blue orb-like planet Earth. She longed for the nature of Earth that couldn't be found on the Moon. She had also fallen in love with the Prince of Earth, Endymion. It was forbidden for the people of the Moon and Earth to talk with each other, let alone be together, and it depressed Selenity. She often ran away from the Moon Palace in secret to visit her love on the Earth, and Endymion often snuck to the Moon to see her.

But someone else had fallen in love with Endymion too. A young woman named Beryl from Earth was infatuated with the young Prince. She became insanely jealous of Endymion's love for Serenity. In her jealous rage she allowed herself to be possesed by the evil Metallia, a force from the Dark Kingdom. Metallia turned Beryl's jealousy into hate for the people of the Moon Kingdom. Beryl then brainwashed Endymion's four Earth generals, Jadeite, Nephrite, Zoisite, and Kunzite (Malachite), and turned them against the young Prince. Metallia's dark energy filled all the people of Earth with hate for the people of the Moon. Metallia made the people of Earth believe lies about them being controlled unfairly by the Moon Kingdom.

Endymion learned of Beryl's plans, and of his generals' betrayals, and went to warn the people of the moon. It was a night of celebration of peace on the Moon Kingdom, and a grand ball was being held that night. Endymion came to warn Selenity about Beryl, but had to flee when Serenity's guards discovered him. Later that night, Endymion disguised himself in a tuxedo and a mask and attended the ball. He had to have one last dance with his princess.

During the ball, Metallia and Beryl forged their attack on the Moon Kingdom. Luna and Artemis alerted the guests of the ball and the kingdom panicked. The four sailor guardians tried to stop Beryl, but their attacks had no effect and they were destroyed by Metallia. Queen Beryl came after the defenseless Princess Selenity for the Ginzuishou (silver crystal), but Prince Endymion put himself between Beryl and Selenity. Beryl's love still burned for Endymion deeply and she offered a chance for him to join with her and rule the Dark Kingdom with him as her king. He refused, and in a jealous rage she killed him.

Selenity was devastated, and in a distraught state she took the sword that had killed Endymion and plunged it into her own chest, killing herself. The dead Prince and Princess lay side by side and it looked as though Metallia and Beryl had won. Queen Serenity was heartbroken at the sight of the dead star-crossed lovers. She decided to use the Ginzuishou to send Selenity and her court to a new future on Earth.

Using the Ginzuishou's mystical power and the last of her strength, Serenity gave up her life to trap Metallia, Beryl, and the rest of her Dark Kingdom in the Ginzuishou. Selenity, Endymion, and the rest of her court were reborn on Earth in the present day Tokyo with no memories of their past lives on the moon. Luna and Artemis were also sent to the future to make sure that if Metallia ever breaks free, Selenity and her court can be awakened to fight her and protect the Ginzuishou.

"Endymion... We'll cross time and live again... And from then on... We'll be happy... Endymion..."
