Age of Empires II: Age of Kings is the successor of Age of Empires, the game is much better then is predecessor but Age of Empires is very good too so Age of Kings is just the best game ever in his genre.
With Age of Kings you are living in the Dark age, Feudal Age, Castle Age or Imperial Age. You can choose out 13 civilizations. Each civilization has his own Unique Unit(s) and his own style of Buildings. Of course you have the choice from many units, for instance archers, infantry, knights,  siege weapons, canons and much more. All the units can be upgraded the most of the units can be upgraded many times.
You can play a Campaign ,Random Map , Death Match and Regicide game. The last one is new compared with Age of Empires ,in this sort of game you start with some villagers, a castle and a king. The goal is to kill the king of the enemy and keep yours alive.
They are 5 Campaigns: Frederick Barbarossa (with the Teutons), Joan of Arc (with the Franks), Saladin (with the Saracens), Genghis Khan (with the Mongols). All the campaigns are historically based scenarios.
There are also some new gameplay options compared with his predecessor: Formations, Garrisoning, Combat features, Find Idle villagers, Gather points, Improved interface.

Formations - Precision control of how your army moves an engages in combat.
Garrisoning - Station units inside buildings for protection, healing and surprise attack.
Combat features - Order military units to patrol, guard, or follow and choose their combat stance.
Find Idle villagers - Automatically locate villagers not assigned to a task using the Idle Villager button.
Gather points- New units automatically gather at a location or garrison inside a building.
Improved interface - Units behind buildings and trees are visible; the mini-map has Normal, Combat and Economic Modes; chat interface is expanded.

My opinion is that this is a game that you just have to buy, it is a great game and even better then Age of Empires. If you want to get a real impression of the game then just click here for the trail version.
There are also two strategy guides for AOK (Age of Kings), the CNET multiplayer strategy guide and the GameProWorld strategy guide. You can of course also buy the game then you just have to click here.
