BBC News: One of the most reliable and authoritative sources for breaking news on the Web. The design is simple and seamless, with the various news items presented under neat categories on the main page. Loading of the main page and sub-pages takes about 20 seconds to more than a minute depending on traffic flow and volume of graphics. Of course, the visual-based sections, like the News in Pictures feature, take longer to come up. There are no cluttered panels to worry about, but you still get summaries of all the important news of the hour, with visuals, the moment you enter the site. Besides getting a round-up of the news, the various sections presenting the full reports -- Front Page, World, UK, UK Politics, Business, Sci/Tech, Health, Education, Sport, Entertainment) -- are only a click away. And if you're a patient surfer, you'll enjoy the audio and video files embedded in the reports. The interactive sections, like Talking Point and Feedback, are also easy to get into from the main page. The updates are quite frequent -- sometimes hourly if the story is an earth-shaking one -- and most of the reports are usefully cross-linked.
Outside Online: The Web edition of the leading US outdoor magazine is an excellent resource for wanna-be and armchair adventurers. Updated monthly, the site features full-text versions of most of the articles featured in the print edition. Contributors range from authoritative figures from the world of outdoor adventure to well-known wanderlust-infected US authors. Loading of the main page takes up to a minute or more but once everything's in, you just click away from the headlined summaries of the featured articles. The October edition, accessible through an archive that dates back more than two years, includes a fascinating series of articles on the explorers who conquered Mt. Everest, including an interview with the first man to reach the summit (or was he?), Sir Edmund Hillary.
Bibliomania: A virtual library of literary classics for impoverished bibliophiles and freeloading bookworms. There are four categories -- Fiction (60 classic novels), Non-Fiction (biography, science, economics, ancient texts), Poetry and Shakespeare. All the texts are in HTML so if you have lots of empty diskettes, just click on what you want and load them up chapter by chapter. And since there are no visuals, loading is pretty fast. You can download a whole book in less than 15 minutes! There's also an easy search box that let's you get to what you're looking for immediately. Among the latest selections (updated Aug 6) featured are Mark Twain's Huckleberry Finn, Webster's Unabridged Dictionary 1913 Edition and Sigmund Freud's The Interpretation of Dreams.
How Stuff Works: Ever wondered how cell phones, CD players, computers, car engines and many other modern technological marvels work? Then the vividly illustrated, "for dummies"-style articles on this site would greatly satisfy your curiosity. Created by American Marshall Brain, a former computer science teacher and author of several self-help books, it covers a wide range of topics, most of which are dealt with by figures of authority. As an example of the kind of first-rate features offered here, check out Dr. Jerry Gordon's series of pieces on teeth matters. Layout is simple and straightforward, and because of an absence of panels and high-capacity graphics, loading is fast.
Mr. Showbiz: One of the Top Ten sites for entertainment news on the Web. Just type in the address, click and the page loads up within a minute, offering the latest Hollywood gossip, movie and CD reviews, pop chart updates and all kinds of other showbiz titbits. Entering most of the sub-pages is a cinch, and while there are pictures, they're compressed for fast loading -- no high-zoot affairs that take half an hour to load here! This site is part of the Go Network so it's interlinked with sites that offer other kinds of news and even one with free e-mail accounts.
