John Pinney Andrews was born October 8, 1904 in New London, Connecticut. He was the son of Charles Robert Andrews and Rebecca May Washburn. He was named after his greatgrandfather's best friend and next door neighbor in Staffordville, John Pinney. The houses of these two good friends still stand.
John had brothers George, Avery and Lee, and sisters Adelaide and Belva, a fourth brother, Robert died as a small child. The children grew up on Shaw Street in New London.
Summers were spent at Crystal Lake in Tolland County, between Stafford and Ellington, first in tents, then in a one room cottage that his brother Avery built. The brothers and sisters were close all of their lives and eventually there were four houses side by side at the Lake.
Dad went to school at Arnold College in New Haven, coached sports for while at Michigan State Teachers' College and then went to New York. There he ran the athletic programs at Children's Village at Dobb's Ferry where he met his first wife, Ludelle Hinaman. Dad and Lu lived for a while in Williamsport, PA where dad worked for Ludelle's brother, Art. Dad flew Ginny bi-planes with Art and even did some barnstorming in Daytona Beach.
Their son, Stephen Charles Andrews, my half-brother was born in Williamsport in 1935. (Steve died in December 1996 and I will do a page for him. He was quite a guy and we all miss him terribly.)
The marriage didn't last and he came back to Connecticut and went to work for Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, where he met mom, Ruth Virginia Reede, and worked there until retirement. When he retired, they moved to Stuart, Florida. He died there in 1986.
Photos of them in their youth with some brief statistics. Coming soon: photos of their spouses.
