John Sonsteby was born January 15, 1878 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to Knute Johnsen Sonsteby and Christina Sorenson. May 28, 1913 he married Alice Rosalie Osland, daughter of Briger Osland and Theresa Korsvik. Justice Sonsteby died April 15, 1941 on a visit to his daughter, Helene and her husband, Henry Sinclair in Florida.
His mother died the year he was born and I haven't been able to find a record of her death. His father then married Gunda within the year, and they had five daughters and one son. Knute Sonsteby was a vest maker and a tailor and he raised his son working alongside him. Knute died in 1898. John was in John Marshall Law School. In 1906 he began practicing law. He was elcted Chief Justice in 1930 and re-elected in 1936.
Alice Osland was born March 12, 1898 in Chicago, Illinois to Birger Osland and Theresa Korsvik.
