ukuro bars - heh, heh. There were some good ones there, too. That photo of LTC Kenworthy with GEN Tojo brought back some old memories cuz he was 720th CO while I was there. He was followed by LTC Alvin Welch, commonly referred to as "Pear Shape" cuz of th

I recently heard a story from someone who served at Sugamo and was part of the detail responsible for guarding Tojo. Apparently, Tojo had a few personal belongings that he kept in a small box in his cell. One item was very special to him. He took it with
im each day to trial. My understanding is that it might have been an ancient coin of some sort.
One day, the item came up missing. There was quite a disturbance and the cell block was thoroughly searched. It took two days to get Tojo to attend trial again.
I am wondering if anyone is familiar with this story and what the item was, its origin, and what significance it might have had to Tojo. Apparently it was a very important "good luck" charm. Being that he was later hanged, well...
I find this to be a very intriguing story and am trying to find more information.
Please email me if you know anything. Thanks.

I arrived at Sugamo Prison Sept. 1946 and was assigned to the Motor Pool. I cannot remember the date but I think it was before the weather got cold that I was told to be back at the motor pool after chow at a certain time. I was assigned a jeep and disp
tched to pull up in front of the prison main gate. When I did this an officer, a major I believe, came out of the guard room and told me to stay in the jeep and he would give me instructions where I would drive. We were to take "Tokyo Rose" and her husb
nd into Tokyo as she was being released. I understand that she was later incarcerated and tried in San Francisco. I remember that I also drove Tojo to the general hospital in Tokyo accompanied by guards. As I remember he had bronchitis or something sim
lar. While I was at Sugamo Prison the theatre, service club and football field were built.

I know that this site is for veterans who served at Sugamo Prison, But my mother Helen Mahr was on McArthur's staff for War crimes and spent much time at Sugamo. She took the notes at Tojo's trial, along with many other Japanese war criminals including th

If anyone remembers her that would be great. Also any suggestions on how to get access to the trial

We were up the road from you at Camp Oji, or more officially, lst Tokyo Arsenal. Am helping a man up in Bowling Green, Ohio, who is writing the history of Oji Camp, l946-l958, with any material that I can find. Have finally located numerous maps of the ar

ance, but not of its exact location. Spent a lot of time in the Japanese movie house and a coffee house or two there in Ikebukuro, mostly stopped there and walked on over to Oji Camp. Have a lot of slides that I have borrowed from folks to copy, of the Oj
area, but would like to have some pictures or slides of Ikebukuro too, found some nice memories of that area. Anyone interested in visiting, or rehashing old stories maybe we had some things in common. We had good intramural sports program, and some of

Did a bit of time at the Prison as a guard in various caspacities in Janurary and February 1946 Even at that time there were ropes being stretched hanging down on one of the inner walls, close to the guard room where we stayed while waiting to be needed
some place. From what you report, not many were ever used. John

As usual Bob did a bang up job on this project. Bob and I didn't always agree on everything, which is normal. Personely Bob and I had our own little War going on. However that never had any conflict with the Reunion Association.
Bob and I could never agree too agree.
This was always like the Army.
All I can say is Bob did one Hell of Job in runing the Association.
Well Done BOB!!!

Sugamo Prison was a great place to be stationed at in those days. The good times all ended when the Korean war started and a lot of the young men at Sugamo were the first to pay the price. I will never forget those days.

I am the the son of a Sugamo Veteran. My Dad was William T. Wiley 47-49. He was a guard and for a while on the hangman's detail. My dad passed a way in January 94. Because of him I now work for the Michigan Dept of Corrections as a Houseing Unit Manager.
am VERY PROUD of what my dad did at Sugamo, and the rest of the guy's that served there. Keep up the good work and NEVER FORGET that these men served their country in a way that most people don't know about. I WILL NEVER FORGET.
Signed a VERY PROUD Son. Leo Wiley

Hello again, Uncle Bob. I HAD to look at your site, now that I have access and time to spend on looking at prison history. Very interesting. I apologize for my remarks. Thats what I get for "assuming", huh? Especially after all the years I had in the Ar
y, I broke the number 1 rule. Forgive me. Besides, your daughter took care of the "razzing". But seriously, it does upset me that the schools that I attended, never taught us anything about Sugamo Prison, so I never heard of it. But I sure as hell was tau
t about the Nazi trials, so I wonder who placed the importance on what was to be taught, and what wasn't.
What was your military job(mos), and were you a guard, or something else? Like i said, Dad never told us much about what you did, so did you serve entirely in the pacific theater, or just at the Prison? Not trying to bring up old memories, just trying to
learn for any future Shively Generations so we can all know who did what. I think Grandpa told me more than Dad, but I was also very young when he talked to me, and my memories didn't hold very much info.
So anyways, forgive me for my stupidity, and I hope to hear from you someday. Give my love to Aunt Betty. Great site. Love, DJ
