(Clik pic for larger image) Sidney Colthorpe outside his off-licence at the corner of Christchurch Street and Cemetery Road, Ipswich, around 1940. Sidney was the landlord of the Eclipse public house at the corner of Upper Orwell Street and Orwell Place from around 1900 to 1910 before moving to his shop in St Helen’s Street. This building is now converted to flats. (borrowed from Kindered Spirits, Evening Star)

Mick Fiddy (Left Ipswich 34 years ago to live in Aussie with my wife and son.) I lived on Woodbridge Road in the 1940's-1950's. What I can remember is Samuel Road leading into Cemetery Road. On the corner of Samul Road was a coffin maker. A little further, about half way on the right, was St Johns Ambulance. A bit further again, was a fish and chip shop, and next to that a paper shop. The start of Cemetery Road, on the left, was a stone mason, and next to that an off-license. 25/02/04
