Note: Patrick, the fourth of five children this family has lost, died of Cancer in March
1997. The following is an article that appeared in the college paper.
Farewell, Dear Friend . . .
Members of the ICC were greatly saddened upon the loss of our dear friend and former
housemate Patrick S. (Nakamura Fall/Winter 1994-95, Nakamura Fall 1995; Joint Spring/Summer 1995).
While living at Nak, Patrick was a student at Michigan, where he became active with the Coalition
Against the Contract 'on' America (CACOA). He helped organize CACOA's campus
and city demonstration in the early spring of 1995. Patrick also worked
as a server first at Chili's and later at Real Seafood Company.
At home, members could often find Pat fulfilling his love of music, either by strumming his guitar
or listening to his extensive CD collection (with Pavement often the disc
of choice). His ability to prepare nachos rivaled none, leading some to
dub the house "Nachomura". He popularized the study break of
running across the street to Pinball Pete's for a game of Centipede. When
sitting down for "Coffee Talk", he used his wisdom and insight
to help us through the difficult moments. Always ready for a party, he
helped initiate numerous occasions of merriment. Above all, Pat was one
of those special personalities that helps to transform a co-op into a real home.
To know Patrick was to love him. His wide grin and warm brown eyes were always a welcome greeting
coming home at the end of the day. Intelligent, quick-witted and personable,
Pat was a vital part of the social scene of the house. Be it drinking a
beer on Nak's porch roof, swinging on Joint's tire swing or simply hanging
out, the small day-to-day moments with Patrick were always well spent.
He touched our lives and our hearts during the short time we had with him.
Pat reminds us of the importance of keeping a sense of perspective, laughing often, and above
all enjoying the many small good moments of life.
He is survived by his wife Stacey, his parents William and Mary, and his brother Brian. Patrick
was predeceased by one brother and two sisters. He also is remembered by
many, many friends and co-workers from Clinton Township and Ann Arbor.
Additionally, Patrick touched the lives of many ICC members past and present.
Thank you for everything, Pat. We'll always love you. -- Brian A.
