Summary:

Having been arrested by police (see Justice #20), Justice blasts his way out of the police station he was being held in (see Justice #21) while lost in a hallucinatory state, believing himself to be on Farside, the imaginary world "created" by the late Daedalus Darquill. He calmly strolls down the street after having used his shields to disable a police helicopter that insisted on following him.

Inside the now-decimated police station, the precinct commander tells the story of what has happened to Mayor Huntly, who credits the story to a bumbling precinct commander who is only trying to cover up the destruction. Colonel Mac Browning of the U.S. Special Forces (last seen in THE PITT bookshelf edition) enters and backs up the man's story, saying his men will take care of the situation. Mr. Updike of the NSC convinces the Mayor that his men are already all over the city and can capture Justice discreetly.

Justice walks into an alley, asking four bums if they've seen Darquill. The leader of the four tells him no and to go away. Pulling a revolver, he fires, and Justice raises his shield, ricocheting the bullet and killing the man instantly. He takes the dead bum's coat before walking away. The remaining three then decide to use their dead leader, Eddie, to keep the fire going.

Colonel Browning fails to convince the Mayor that they can end the siege surgically, and promises 12 hours. Seeing a lieutenant, he tells him that they're moving out, now. Miss Windels, the attorney, sees that the bricks from the police wall have smashed her car, leaving it useless. Justice approaches, mistaking her for Endolina, and gets a face full of mace for his troubles. Frying the mace can, he turns and talks as if holding a conversation with someone else before running fast and hard from there.

Miriam (AKA Playback) and Angela leave Updike and Pasko, chatting about the situation when Miriam sits on Ms. Windels' car. Recieving a strong psychic impression, she uses her power to focus on the situation just moments earlier, calling out to Justice not to hurt Windels. Updike uses this lead on Justice to track him down, telling Angela that he plans to use a tranquilizer gun (knockout darts) on Justice. Angela almost violently refuses.

Colonel Browning and his men catch up with Justice only to be easily defeated, with Justice believing Browning to be Darquill. Browning tries to sit up, a piece of shrapnel from the burning troop transport lodged in his left leg, only to have Tensen pin him by the neck, on the verge of serving justice when a hideous creature yells for him to stop. The creature is actually Angela, but to Justice, she is a four armed, pink-skinned obscenity. Angela causes Justice to snap out of his drug induced fantasy, while Updike uses the dart gun to keep a soldier from killing Justice.
