The phikul is one of the round floral motifs in
Thai decorative art. Flowers having four petals
are called " Dok-jan
" , but
those with six or eight small petals called

Phikul " ,
there may be more than six or eight petals .
The
name of the pikul motif various in a confusing
way from place to place as the designin such
an ancient one. As already mentioned , in the
North and Northeast , it known as
Dok
kaeo .
However, in some place ,
the maeng
ngot [
scorpion ] motif is called phikul
. What is more
, in some places , there are pieces of Silk
Phum Riang [
Nakhon Sithammarat ] cloth
bearing designs called phikul-lom
and dok-
kaeo-lom ,

Among the Thai-Laos , Khid Dok-kaeo is so called
ta-leo [

as it might be , this variation is further evidence
of the great age of the phikul motif in Thai
woven fabric.
