You can download either an 800 pixel or 1024 pixel wide border for your 800x600 or 1024x768 screen size. View each border in full screen mode by clicking on its thumbnail.
From the full screen page, save any background to your hard drive by right clicking on any of the backgrounds and "Save Image As" .... or download the complete free set by selecting the zip file.
