The Gantlet

The Gantlet was designed by *GOP*Acl (a.k.a. Mark Berry) as a level to test one's piloting ability, not necessarily their dogfighting ability. Although you'll need a bit of both to survive!

About The Gantlet

This level differs from the other Descent II levels in that rather than flying around and killing mindless bots, the objective is simply to survive and to make it to the end as quickly as possible. One may kill any of the bots in the level with any weapons found in the level but stopping to kill bots unnecessarily will obviously hurt your time.

In order for a time to count, there must be at least two pilots, a RUNNER and a TIMER. The RUNNER starts the game with these very specific settings:

The TIMER will be inserted in the mine in front of a red checkerboard wall. This is the TIMING WALL.

The RUNNER will be inserted in front of the start door. This is providing that the RUNNER started the level.

The TIMER will signal the runner that he/she is ready by sending a message. The RUNNER may start anytime after receiving the signal from the TIMER.

The TIMER will start the time when the TIMING WALL disappears, not when the TIMER hears a door open, and not when the TIMER hears shots being fired. This is very important for accuracy. It may even help to have the TIMER turn off the sound to prevent starting/stopping the stopwatch inaccurately.

The TIMER can use [shift]+F1 or [shift]+f2 to toggle one of the windows on the screen to show the view of the RUNNER. This makes the TIMER's job a bit more bearable, and it helps to ready the timer for the finish.

The TIMER stops the time when the wall closes, again on sight and not on sound.

Once you've successfully made it through The Gantlet, submit your time by sending an email to our Web Page Master . Be sure to include the following information:

If a time is simply too good to be true, an Elder may call for a "validation time trial", in which the RUNNER will have to run The Gantlet again and must complete the level within one second of the reported time. If the RUNNER is unable to do this, the time recorded by the Elder will stand.
