Battle suits are space suits with additional anti-ballistic and
anti-radiation protective armor and self-sealing capabilities. More
advanced battle suits include micro-motorized muscle
augmentation systems, which sense the movements of the
wearer's extremities and move the armored segments of the suit
in response. This allows the wearer to move freely while wearing
bulky armor or to perform feats of strength necessary on
high-gravity worlds. They also act to cushion physical impact.
IA-4 Infantry Suit
Classification: Infantry Battle Suit
The IA-4 Infantry Suit is the standard battle suit for the Colonial
Marine Corps. It is capable of protecting the wearer from a
limited sustained burst from the M-81 Pulse Rifle and has
significantly improved the survivability of the soldier in the field
in all theatres.
The IA-4 includes an integral micro-fusion power generator,
which powers the standard M-81 Pulse Rifle sidearm, as well as
the micro-motorized muscle augmentation and impact-absorption
systems. The impact absorption systems are particularly robust,
allowing a soldier to fall up to thirty feet on high-gravity worlds
with a minimal likelihood of injury. The Helmet Mounted Display
provides "Heads-up" instrumentation concerning armor integrity,
weapon status, and threat tracking.
The IA-4 includes the standard M-81 and attachment power
socket, as well as integral M-17 mine dispenser unit.
PA-9 Scout Suit
Classification: Infantry Battle Suit, Propelled
The PA-9 was the first of the rocket
propelled battle suits. It is almost identical
the IA-4, but includes a powerful,
computer-stabilized plasma rocket pack
and a more powerful micro-fusion
generator. The pack superheats a limited
amount of gasses into a plasma state
before ejecting them through the vectored
exhaust nozzles. The suit's computer
makes constant, tiny adjustments to the
nozzles' release vector to stabilize flight
and responds to the wearer's commands to
alter direction.
The super-heating process takes place in a separate chamber of
the rocket pack and takes several seconds to achieve maximum
levels. This sharply limits the sustained flight potential of the
pack. While work has been done to improve the capacity and
speed of the processing chamber, no significant gains have yet
been made without compromising the safety of the wearer.
Additionally, the PA-9 is built with radar-, infrared-, and
sound-absorbent composites to reduce its detectability on the
battlefield. The resulting limited stealth characteristics improve
the PA-9's usefulness for reconnaissance missions.
PA-11 Combat Suit
Classification: Infantry Battle Suit, Propelled
The PA-11 is the standard battle suit for
the Colonial Marines "Jump Corps,"
nicknamed "Dreadnauts." It has
significantly greater armor levels than the
PA-9 (at the sacrifice of some of the
stealth characteristics and overall rocket
pack performance), as well as a
shoulder-mounted hardpoint for heavy
personal weapons. It is an excellent
general-purpose battle suit, useful for a
variety of missions.
PA-15 Assault Suit
Classification: Infantry Battle Suit, Propelled
The PA-15 is the ultimate in personal
armored protection. While it's limited
rocket-pack performance and high sensor
cross-section make it a liability for some
missions, it's incredible armor and
weapons capacity make up for it. The
PA-15 includes a second
shoulder-mounted hardpoint for personal
heavy weapons, as well as a second M-17
mine dispenser.
Due to maintenance expense and limited
supplies of the PA-15, it's use is only
authorized for mission-critical operations.
PAX-21 Dreadnaut Suit
Classification: Infantry Battle Suit, Propelled, Experimental
The PAX-21 is nearing the end of its
prototype evaluation phase and has thus
far proved itself admirably. Blending the
best of both worlds of the PA-15 and the
PA-11 battle suits, the PAX-21 can be
viewed as a lighter, cheaper version of the
assault suit. While not as heavily armored
as the PA-15, it includes two M-17 integral
two shoulder-mounted heavy weapon
hardpoints and two M-17 mine dispensers.
It also includes slightly heavier armor than
the PA-11. Colonial command expects to
phase this suit into the Jump Corps units
within the year.
