inquiry. He had been at sea since January 1900. He had been shipwrecked
on a deserted island, he had prospected for gold in the Yukon, and he had
been a cowboy in Canada. He returned to the Oceanic after the disaster
and he remained there until she was shipwrecked on a reef in WWI.
At the end of 1915 he received command of a torpedo ship. He later
retired
from the sea, knowing White Star wouldn’t let a former Titanic officer
have a ship of his own. For a few years he ran a guest house in London,
and he later raised chickens. In WWII he used his own pleasure boat,
The
Sundowner, to assist the evacuation of Dunkirk).
