Mirai Gohan's Death
Gohan's Death                   Other Deaths
Mirai Trunks only dies once and that is against Cell in the original timeline but death is an important aspect of his character. All of his potential friends are killed while he is very young leaving him with a single parent and a single friend. Eventually he is left with just a single family member and in an apocolyptic future. Death touches Trunks in a variety of ways, the death of his Father meant that he never knew him. The death of his friend Gohan sparked the change that allowed him to achieve SSJ.

Trunks begins his training early but it is only after arriving at a  destructed of another City by the Artificial Humans. Landing and finding the aftermath to be too much he returns home amidst tears and anger. Begging Gohan to teach him more advanced skills the pair quickly try and advance Trunks to the level of SSJ.  Howvever hard Gohan and Trunks try Trunks cannot manage to go SSJ until...
The Death of Gohan, left, is the catalyst for Trunks to go Super Saiya-jin. Destroyed in a brutal battle with 17 and 18 Gohan is quickly defeated and destryed with the use of the Renzoku Senkoudan attack. An attack that uses multiple ki blasts that then fold in  upon themselves to create an enourmous explosion.
After Gohan dies at the hands of 17 and 18, Trunks finds his friends body shattered in a rain swept street. The weather perfectly expressing his emotions. Trunks's anger at the Artificial Humans  finally peaks forcing the transformation to SSJ. The Thumbnails (Right) can all be viewed in full size by clicking on them. They are high quality and well worth checking out, especially in what was a particularly emotional moment. (I'm actually missing the ninth picture so sorry about that, I'll try and capture it again!)
Gohan's death also had a positive effect. After trying a vengence battle against 17 and 18, Mirai Trunks realised that he would not be able to win without the aid of Goku and he knew that he would have to journey to the past before he could finaly gain the strength to exact revenge for his friends death.

As it was he journeyed to battle with the Androids in the normal timeline and found the strength and power he needed by training with Vegeta. He returned home and executed a vengence assault with deadly fury.
The next thing to note is the fact that in the Manga Trunks had already gone Super Saiya-jin before the death of Mirai Gohan. The death only makes Trunks scream not turn him into an Super Saiya-jin. It was changed in the Anime to allow a better storyline to develop. So basically I consider the Anime as the primary source while so much of the Manga is still unavailable in the Western World.
The Final Thing I have is the final speech of Mirai Gohan declaring Mirai Trunks to be the Last Hope For Earth (Hence the sites title):

'I'm not going to die! Not even when this body is destroyed...

There will be another who will arise and carry out my last wish...

And He will defeat you Artificial Humans!'
