Big Time knocks out three dragster to win ASDA points race in Longview!

The Big Time Top Alcohol Funny Car took out three heavy hitters enroute to the blown alcohol title August 6th & 7th at Barlow Point Raceway in Longview, Washington. Qualifying 5th, with a best of 2.87 ET at 119.61 MPH, Mahoney seemed to be a long shot to outlast a field of four dragster and two funny cars. In the three qualifying sessions on Saturday, Big Time was having control issues as the car made dead left turns on each of his three passes.

In Carey's first qualifying pass he ran his lowest qualifying time, a 2.87 ET @ 119.61. On his second pass he slowed to a 3.05 ET at 113.63 MPH. On his third and final attempt, Big Time made a violent left turn at about the 40 yard mark and Carey was forced to peddle the car to stay off the guard rail. On this pass he managed only a 3.11 ET at 100.28 MPH.

On raceday, Carey was matched up with the number 4 qualifier, Dennis Reick in his Hammer Down Top Alcohol Dragster. After the cars rolled into the box, Reick committed a staging foul and drew the red light. Carey motored down the track with a 2.88 ET at 128.65 MPH. The win set up a long anticipated rematch of last years final between Mahoney and Mike Davis. Davis paced the field in qualifying laying down a weekend best 2.71 ET. with his Allen Johnson powered Top Alcohol Dragster. With a lot of driving and a little bit of luck, Carey took out Davis by 12 thousands of a second. Both drivers had to peddle on the run, and Davis' parachute came out a little prematurely. The semi-final win set up a final round showdown between Mahoney's Big Time and Gary Mink's Bad to the Bone Top Alcohol Dragster.

As the drivers prepared for the final round, just before firing their cars, the tractor which grooms the track had a mechanical issue. With the left lane only half groomed, Mink used his lane choice to stick the Big Time Funny Car with the disadvantage. While a sand track is 100 yards long the final was won in the starting blocks. Carey shot out of the boxes with a .492 reaction time to Mink's .653. During the pass once again Big Time was skating all over the track, but Carey didn't lift. Mink thundered down the track with a 2.77 ET, but it wasn't enough to catch Mahoney's 2.87 @ 128.66 MPH. in what was one of the fasted side by side races of the weekend.

Carey would personally like to thank the drivers who made the trip up to Longview from down South. It was a great race and a great time for all involved and we hope to see you all and more next time.

Big Time wins Funny Car Nationals

Carey Mahoney's Big Time Funny Car paced the field of racers July 9th & 10th in Longview, Washington. Mahoney laid down a barrage of two second passes in qualifying with a best of 2.79 @ 131 m.p.h. After overcoming some issues with an oil pump Mahoney was able to keep the car consistent on race day, beating Andy Prasky in the final.

Carey is looking forward to the ASDA points race in Longview on August 6&7 and is hoping for a solid turnout in the blown alcohol class. Please e-mail with questions regarding the race.

Past Events

Murphy's Law in full effect for Carey Mahoney at Wild West Nationals.

After months of preparation, N.W.S.C.A. (Northwest Sand Competition Association) was proud to unveil the new sand track in Longview, Washington for the Wild West Nationals. About an inch of rain fell on the track Thursday night before the race, but the N.W.S.C.A. crew worked hard throughout the night to get the track ready for racing on Saturday and Sunday.

Due to the rain delay, the Big Time car was only able to make two qualifying passes. On the first pass, when Carey let the clutch out the car instantly died. Apparently the car didn't have the proper fuel setup and wasn't getting enough gas. The Big Time crew worked hard to find out the problem and got the car ready for the second and final qualifying session. Mahoney churned out a 3.05, jumping up to the second qualifying position in the five car field.

On raceday, Mahoney squared off against the Mr.Dig'em funny car and ran another 3.05 ET which was good enough to advance to the second round. Faced with a bye run in the second round Carey gunned for lane choice but came up short running another 3.05.

The final round of elimination's came down to the Big Time funny car and the blown alcohol dragster of Mike Davis. Davis had the performance advantage all weekend, running in the mid 2.60's, and the lane choice. It was your typical David vs Goliath type of race. However, Mahoney drilled Davis out of the box, cutting a magnificent .404 reaction time to Davis' .623. Mahoney easily beat him to the finish line, so it seemed. Due to a light malfunction in Davis' lane he was automatically given the winlight. The photocell at the finish line was slightly off and Davis got the win light right when his car moved out of the stage beams. Due to all the rain delays the cars weren't able to rerun, and Davis was declared the event winner.

Big Time finishes season with a bang!

Carey Mahoney and the Big Time crew made the 1100-mile trip to Primm, Nevada during the second weekend of October to defend his Pro-Long Winter Nationals crown.

Since winning the season opening Spring Nationals in Primm, Carey and his crew have been working hard to keep the Big Time funny car looking good and running hard. The team also added a new set of Kevlar reinforced scooper tires with special thanks to Clawson Motorsports in Fresno, California.

In qualifying for the race things were going as expected for the Big Time Racing Team. The team started out with the same set-up they ran in April and then improved every time down the track. When it came to race day the Big Time Funny car qualified number 4 in a field of 22 of the worlds fastest blown alcohol sand cars in the world. The Big Time team was only 4 thousands of a second behind the number one qualifier.
When eliminations started it was all business in the Big Time pits. Everyone on the crew did a flawless job and the driver was definitely in race mode. The Big Time funny car marched through the 1st, 2nd, and semi-final rounds putting it in the final.
In the final race everything looked good. The Big Time car was the fastest car left in eliminations. With both cars roaring and the lights coming down Mahoney sawed down the tree with an almost perfect .418 reaction time only to have the motor let go about 50 feet out. Rolly Klingenstein took the win with a 3.12 et and he will be the defending champion the next time we meet.
It has been a great season for the CAM-1 Racing team but now it's going to be a long winter of work building a new engine for the car and servicing everything else. Check back from time to time and we'll keep you up on our progress, as we get ready for the 2003 season.

Big Time lays down track record in Grain Valley, Missouri!

Carey Mahoney and his Big Time funny car made an 1800 mile trip to the Thunder Nationals in Grain Valley, Missouri, September 6th and 7th. Mahoney over powered the track on his first pass and had to abort the run. After some minor adjustments in the clutch can, his second qualifying attempt was a fast and straight 2.93 at 107mph. Carey had some problems adjusting to the track as the race is ran at night and the lighting in the shut down area was not great for a funny car that likes to get a little crazy. Saturday, on his third qualifying attempt Carey got the tune up for the Missouri air and laid down a track record shattering 2.83 second blast. The track record at the Thunder Valley track was a 2.91. Everything seemed great until the first round of competition when the Big Time funny car left the line getting the big RED LIGHT. It was a sad ending for a great weekend.
You can see the Big Time funny car in action again trying to upset the competition at the Winter Nationals in Primm, Nevada, October 16th through the 20th. Don't you dare miss it!

Big Time Wins Wild West Nationals in Albany, Oregon!!!!

Aug. 25- The Big Time funny car showed up in Albany, Oregon sporting a newly powder coated chassis and more chrome looking very good. Carey Mahoney wins "Big Time" at Primm

Apr. 8-
Carey Mahoney won his first victory of the season on Sun. Apr 7 in Primm, Nev. Along with the trophy, Mahoney walked away with a check for $1000, and some newly found confidence. After qualifying third with a 2.96 E.T., Mahoney worked his way through the elimination bracket by posting all sub .500 reaction times and keeping the car in control. Although Mahoney was plagued with traction problems through elimination's, his keen driving ability made up for it.

Mahoney battled tire problems in elimination's as well, but was able to pull it out on race day. There were eighteen blown alcohol cars in attendance at Primm and hopefully many of them will show up in Albany for the ASDA points race to try to dethrone the king.
