Art of the Irish Potato Famine
Kat O'Brien has recently returned from Ireland where she constructed
an installation floating in the Camac River at the Carbery Water Gardens,
Clondalkin, in the west of Co. Dublin. The work is entitled "La Langue
d'Eau: In the Wake of Grosse Île."
The intention of the piece is to highlight the commemoration to the
Irish who passed through or died at the quarantine centre at Grosse Île,
Quebec during the years 1832-1938. The first ship to pass through the centre
with cholera victims (June 1832) was called the "Carricks"; it had sailed
from Dublin. Over 5000 Irish are buried in a mass grave on the island called
Grosse Île.
The exhibition was organized by Cliondha Cussens, of the Sculptors'
Society of Ireland. The work was on exhibition until mid-September 1996.
She is doing more work related to this subject and would much appreciate
information about possible venues for exhibitions in the US, Canada, and
Ireland. She can be reached at sylviega@aei.ca
