Functional Group: 3 nitrate groups

Character: It is a colourless, slightly volatile, oily liquid. It explodes on rapid heating or on percussion. Mass per mL is about 1.6g.

It is soluble 1 in 800 of water and 1 in 4 of ethanol. It is miscible with acetone, glacial acetic acid, ethyl acetate, benzene, pyridine, chloroform, chloroform and ether.

It is sparingly soluble in petroleum ether, liquid petrolatum and glycerol.

In fatty or oily solution it is safe and stale but in alcoholic solution the substance must be handled with the utmost caution.

Partition coefficient: Log P (octanol/water) = 1.6
