Until this season, Bud was known for one great year: 1995. That was the
year he whipped through the regular season undefeated, but lost in the
final four to Talbot 69-48. The other years in the league had been somewhat
mediocre. Bud himself was somewhat quiet, not rocking the boat. 1999
changed that.
Bud opened the season scoring 42 points, but lost to Wallace who scored 64.
Then three straight wins with 58, 45 and 60. Bud's Redskin trio of
QB Brad Johnson, Stephen Davis and Albert Connell were putting up points at
an incredible rate. Bud's bench was scoring. The week he scored 60. His entire
roster scored 111 points. However, there was the controversy. Bud special
reserved four QBs to try and cripple JK who had Green Bay on a bye. That
strategy was overkill, but the event sent shockwaves through the league.
Sportsmanship and fair play aside, it was a legal move.
The following week, things calmed down. Washington has its bye and Bud
rolled over for Calvin. Then Bud settled into a very solid rolling, winning
his next 5, some incredible shootouts like 49-47 over Barry and 59-51
over Best. When division play returned, Bud was in first and was looking good.
Then in week 11, lowly 1-9 Talbot came calling. Since the 95 upset,
Talbot was a torn in Bud's side. He continued to be. Thirty point favorite
Bud, lost. Fortunately Wallace also lost. That set up their Thanksgiving
clash. On the eve of the holiday, Wallace made a couple key special reserves
of John Kasey and the Carolina D. Thanks to those moves, Wallace won the
game 36-30 and took over the division.
A week later Bud beat Outlaw and Wallace also won. Then in week 14, Bud
dropped a bombshell. Wallace's special reserve prior to week 12 was illegal.
Wallace had made the SR on Wednesday night, special reserve was supposed to
begin Thursday. Because of the holiday, no one caught it. The game was not
changed, as the commissioner interpreted that you should police your opponent.
Bud thumped Talbot 67-3, but Wallace also won and claimed the division.
Then a bit of irony week 1 of the playoffs. Bud won his first game 30-27.
Wallace won his 46-36. Had Bud won the division, he would have been eliminated
in week 15. Then for revenge in week 16, Bud beat Wallace 33-28. Wallace
left many points on the pine as did Jackson the week before. Bud was in the
Super Bowl, but lucky to be there.
In his first Super Bowl, Bud made some radical moves. Many players on his
team were injured, and Washington had made the playoffs with a dramatic rally
in week 16. He cut Washington and picked up and started Atlanta. A few other moves were made,
but none made much of a difference. Bud scored 48 points, and that should have
been an omen. Best scored 79 to claim the title.
