The Project

The project I have been chosen for is in a fishing area called Chimbote. It is a very industrial area with lots of fish factories in the town. www.chimbote.peru.com

Hogar de Cristo (Home of Christ) is home to 26 girls ranging from 3 years of age up to 20 years. We also have a baby boy whose mum is one of our residents. This is the second year that the project has been running and the organisation, Hogar de Cristo (Home of Christ) is a large charity with programmes running throughout South America. It recently celebrated its 3rd birthday in early November 2003. The Children's home houses 31 girls aged between 8 months and 19 years, all are orphans, or from dysfunctional families who are not able to look after their children. My main job in the home will be helping with the day-to-day running of the orphanage, looking after the children and their general welfare. I will also be involved in organising activities for the children such as arts and crafts, dance, theatre, cooking, sewing, sports and music. There is a daily babysitting service for the neighbours at the orphanage which receives 22 babies (2-3 years old) every morning from 8.30 am until 12.30 p.m. My final role will be teaching the children English and supporting them with their studies, including assisting them with their homework.

Accommodation

I will be living in a self contained room to be shared with my partner Ruth Gordon from Gosport, Hants. The room is situated in the administrative block of the orphanage and the orphanage will provide all my meals.
