The Memphis Tennessee Temple

of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints

Historically the Church has faced a great deal of opposition in the Southern United States. Missouri is notorious in Mormon culture as the center of past persecutions, and Tennessee has a long history of it as well. However, today this opposition seems to be replaced with the spirit of hospitality that the South is also famous for. After the difficulties faced by the Church in getting approval for the Nashville Temple, the Church leaders in Memphis expected similar trouble when a temple was announced for their city. The opposition never came. Instead the local population welcomed the announcement and has supported the construction process.

The temple was announced on 17 September 1998.
Ground was broken and construction begun on 16 January 1999.
The cornerstone was laid and the temple dedicated on 23 April 2000.
There are 2 Sealing rooms and 2 Ordinance rooms in the 10,700 square foot temple.
The spire is about 78 feet tall.
The Memphis Temple serves stakes in Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas.
