1975 EUROPEAN HEAT 1 - BRITISH HEAT
Superstars competitions were expanding worldwide and 1975 saw the first European Superstars. No British event was held in 1975, in deference to the European event. Five heats were scheduled to be held in five different countries in the late summer and early fall, with the first European Superstars championship to be held in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The first heat was held in Britain and two athletes from the home country were included. With 1974 British Superstars champion John Conteh out after injuring his hand in a fight against Willie Taylor in August of 1974, the second and third place finishers, David Hemery and Colin Bell were included in the field of eight. After several mis-starts in rowing, Hemery took the event along with the gym test, weight lifting and cycling. Dutch field hockey player Ties Kruize won the 100 meters, swimming and tennis. With one event left, Hemery lead Kruize by 2 1/2 points entering the decisive event, the 600 meter steeplechase. Since the event was ruled to be "near to specialty" for Hemery (he was barred for the 100 meters), he started the race 100 meters behind the rest of the field. Hemery reeled in the rest of the field, but trailed Bell and Kruize entering the final water jump. His foot slipped on the top of the hurdle and Hemery fell in the water, finishing sixth in the race and out of the points. With his second place finish in the steeplechase, Kruize won the heat and automatically qualified for the European final. As only the winner automatically qualified for the final, the unfortunate Hemery had to hope to qualify based on his points as a wild card. Hemery would advance to the final, but at the expense of Kruize. Just a few weeks after this Superstars heat, Kruize was involved in a car accident that sent him flying through the windshield and in which he suffered a broken leg. Not only would Kruize miss the European final, but also the 1976 Olympic Games. Hemery would go on to the European final despite his accident and Kruize would have to wait two years to compete in Superstars again.
