The History of Piano Music

Studying Piano history, in many ways, can positively improve your overall development as a piano player. It can provide you with a thorough understanding of the styles of the times and the composers behind the music, which lead to better interpretation and a more well-rounded appreciation of music in general.
The history of western music is usually separated into five periods:

Baroque - Bach, Handel, etc.

Classical - Beethoven, Mozart, Haydn

Romanticism - Chopin, Liszt, etc.

Impressionism - Debussy, Ravel

Twentieth-century music - Cage, Schoenberg, Ligeti, etc.
