Performance Tips

There are four basic steps in playing music:

Prepare - Practice - Play - Perform

This note is all about the last step - performance - playing for others.

Performance can happen at any time - eg. On a stage, for friends and relatives, a passing stranger, in an exam. The most common is playing for friends and relatives. Performance brings to light all the weaknesses in your playing that you already secretly knew ! This is useful.

  PERFORMANCE TIPS
!!??.... UNBALANCED PERFORMANCE BALANCED PERFORMANCE TIP
WHOOSH ! You start playing before the audience is ready. You remember the audience and allow one or two seconds silence before you start playing. REMEMBER THE AUDIENCE
THE WHITE RABBIT You’re in a hurry to finish the performance, so you ‘rattle off’ the piece making sure the music gets faster and faster. You remember to relax and enjoy the performance. You play fast pieces in an unhurried way. You might even play a piece a bit slower that you usually do. RELAX AND ENJOY
OOPS ! You make a small mistake, so stop to correct it. You make a small mistake but carry on. REMEMBER TO RELAX !
OH NO !...... Made a big mistake, got huffy and stopped, then started again, still in a huff Made a big mistake, kept one hand going, smiled and carried on. RELAX, RELAX, RELAX!
LUMPY THE CAMEL You play the bits you practiced a lot really well, and the rest is not so good. The good bits go fast, and the poor bits are slower. You play the bits you practiced most with no problem, and the rest is good as well. Speed is right. PRACTICE THE WHOLE PIECE!
THE UNFINISHED SYMPHONY When you reach the end of the piece you quickly look round for applause. When you reach the end of the piece you stay still and listen for one or two seconds. Then you relax back and look to the audience. LET THE MUSIC GO
