Review:Carlito's
Way is one of those movies I’ve enjoyed watching over and over again.
There is a constant sense of tension launched by the title sequence
which sets the flashback story in motion. After spending fiver years
in jail, Carlito, played brilliantly by Al Pacino,(Godfather
II, Scent of a Woman, Scarface)
is unsure of himself and is trying despertaly to move on with his life
and dreams of moving to the Bahammas to open a rental car business.
Sean Penn (Dead Man Walking, 21 Grams,
Hurlyburly, Indian Runner dir.)
gives one of the best supporting actor performances of all-time. Penn
plays the neurotic lawyer friend (Kleinfeld) with a convincing nervous
energy, brought upon by his cocaine habit and his dealings with Tony
T. De Palma, a director known for violence in his films (Scarface,
Carrie) is at his best here in scenes that don't require violence.
For example, there is a brilliant scene were Pacino is on top of a building,
looking down into the room where Gail is performing ballet. The characters
throughout the movie are colorful and unique (Benni Blanco, Pachangu,
Laline, etc...). Carlito’s Way is an underrated masterpiece.
