Weddings Today
Today, couples in Japan enjoy weaving both the ritual of
Japanese wedding tradition with modern Western culture. Because japanese
weddings
are considered a life event, the wedding ceremony and reception are
usually very elaborate. By infusing both ancient old Japanese wedding traditions
with borrowed modern Western culture, couples create an unforgettable
wedding day.
The Japanese Wedding
Only one third of couples in Japan marry in the traditional Shinto
religion wedding ceremony. Most commonly because of two reasons; cost and
the idealism of Western style "Cinderella" weddings. The cost to hold a wedding ceremony at a
Shinto shrine is very expensive from the rental of the shrine to the
traditional silk wedding kimono. In recent decades, Japanese couples choose to marry in
the Western
style Christian ceremony and brides choose to wear white Western bridal
gowns which are rented at wedding boutiques. Because almost all Western style wedding and reception halls in Japan have
miniature Japanese Shinto shrines located inside, the couple can still vow their
marriage to the Japanese God "Kami".
Japanese
Wedding Reception
After the wedding ceremony, the couple greet their guest at the large reception
party where all their friends, family and co-workers are in attendance.
The reception starts with an introduction of the bride and groom. The
reception meal is usually of either French, Chinese or Japanese cuisine and
exquisitely served. Guests make contributions of speeches and songs.
The
bride will normally change her dress several times, a Japanese wedding tradition dating
from the 14th century called "oiro-naoshi" that signifies that she is prepared to return to
everyday life.
If the bride was married in a traditional white wedding kimono, she may
arrive in a colorful embroidered kimono and then change again into an
American style party
dress. If she had a Western style wedding, she may arrive in a wedding
dress, change to a wedding kimono and then to a party dress. The female guests
attend in traditional Japanese kimono attire. Young women wear colorful kimono
with long flowing furisode "butterfly" sleeves and married women
wear more subdued homongi kimono. Male guests traditionally wear Western
style suits. At the end of the
evening, the couple thanks all the guest for attending. Recently, the
Western rituals of exchanging rings, cake cutting, candle lighting, flower
bouquet tossing and
honeymoons have also been adopted.
Weddings outside of
Japan
The number of weddings outside of Japan has
dramatically increased because of the adoption of the Western honeymoon.
By marrying abroad, the honeymoon can be combined with the ceremony thus
reducing the overall costs.
Japanese
Wedding Gifts
In most circumstances, there are actually two wedding gifts
given to the new couple. Friends and relatives will send a wedding gift prior to or after the
wedding day. This gift is never given on the wedding day and is considered
a personal gift to the new couple. A second gift or money gift "goshugi"
beautifully wrapped in a money envelope called "iwai-bukuro" is then
given at the wedding reception and customarily given by
all guests to help the new couple pay for wedding and reception costs. Reception money gifts normally run $30 to
$200 depending on the closeness of the relationship to the bride or groom.
However, with the new introduction of "bridal registry" in
Japan, tradition has changed. Today, many couples register with shops or
catalogs and guests give purchase merchandise from the bride and groom
registry list.
Japanese Wedding
Favors
At the reception, wedding favors are given to all guests that attend as a momentum of their
wedding day. Japanese wedding
favors range from beautifully wrapped traditional Japanese sweets to the
newest novelty
favors like miniature bears. Japanese wedding favors range in price from
$2 to $10 per person.
