Joseph Thomas, 16, was convicted of "Larceny from a person" at Old Bailey, London on 3 Dec 1818, sentenced to "Life", transported by Isabella, captain Berry, left London April 1818, arrived Sydney Sept 1818, and became a labourer at Parramatta. 6 Oct 1823 he applied for permission to marry at Parramatta, changed their minds. (Colonial Secretary Index, 1788-1825, Reel 6011; 4/3509 p.425) He was granted a pardon for having apprehended 14 runaways in the district of Bathurst on 31 March 1828. He married Lydia Hart on 23 Aug 1830. She left him and he had children with two wives whose names we do not know. He died 6 Nov 1876, described as a Northcote, Victoria, storekeeper and his will names three children, Sophia Levy Atkinson, wife of Mr Atkinson of Brighton, Joseph William Thomas who married Christina Grouney, and Mary Julia Thomas. He is buried in the Atkinson family grave, Brighton Cemetery. | |
