Laparoscopic Colon Resection - Surgeons at Massachusetts General Hospital demonstrate to an
Internet audience a minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat colon cancer and diverticulitis. The procedure, known as laparoscopic colon resection, is
performed on select patients with diverticulitis, to remove polyps that cannot be treated with colonoscopy and for selected patients with colon or rectal
cancer. The procedure is performed through several small tubes placed through the abdominal wall. A mini-telescope with a camera is also inserted into the
patient's navel and using this to guide surgeons. The bowel is freed from its attachments to surrounding structures to allow the surgeon to remove the
diseased segment of bowel through a very small incision. The bowel is then reconnected using either stapling devices or sutures. The procedure generally
takes between 2 and 3 hours to perform.
Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy - The procedure is performed on patients with prostate cancer.
The procedure is done through several small incisions in the abdomen, rather than a large, open one. Specially designed surgical instruments and cameras
afford the surgeon precise control and excellent visibility for performing the operation. Massachusetts General Hospital

Left Hepatic Lobectomy in and Infant for
a Large Hepatoblastoma - Infant presenting with a large abdominal mass is diagnosed through CAT scan with a left hepatic hepatoblastoma. A left hepatic
loectomy was then performed through a long left subcostal incision.
Left Lung Thoracoscopy - A lesion in the
left lung is removed with a thorascopic approach. Visible anatomy includes the intercostal muscles and neurovascular bundles, the diaphragm, and the heart.
Left Pneumonectomy - The entire left lung is
removed in this patient with lung cancer. Visible anatomy includes the pulmonary arteries and veins, bronchi, and the aorta. The latissimus dorsi, serratus
anterior, and trapezius muscles are also visible as they are transected to access the chest cavity.
