This is an open letter to companies that want to place their commercials in classrooms. T0 the Marketing Department, I'm working as a teacher of English to foreign students and they want to learn to understand TV commercials. I'd like to use some of your company’s commercials with my students. If the students are happy with the result, I'd like to sell the video to other ESL teachers. The idea is to show the students 20 commercials, but only one sentence at a time. For example, with a commercial for America On Line: "No wonder it's number one" "No wonder it's number one" "No wonder it's number one" "No wonder it's number one" and then a pause of 10 seconds, and the students need to write what they hear. Some students might write "No one turrets nummer won." Then the answer appears or the students can look for the answer on a web page. What do you think? Would you like to participate in this experiment? VALUE TO YOU Since this project will put your commercial in front of potential customers, I propose that I mgiht be given permission by your copany to use the commercial(s) for up to 10 years. You will receive a copy of the video that I will create and the CD that studetns will use in the laboratory. I hope you like this idea... You can send the commercial (up to one minute long) on VHS or give me permission to use a copy that I've copied off the web page. Perhaps a notice stating "This commercial was used with the permission of [your company]" or whatever your lawyers want. Is this something you could work with? I'd like to suggest that my video will give extra play time for your commercial, but that might not be of much value to you. The video might be sold to an estimated maximum market of perhaps 500 ESL teachers over the next 5 or 10 years, so I could offer you a 50-cent royalty payment per video sold for each commercial that I use. The overall price of the video might be $25. I need at least one commercial from your company and a maximum of 4 videos from your company. |
Learn and Laugh is the idea that after you learn enough about a commercial or TV show, you will laugh. (or cry or feel moved to change something). If you want to see a sample of the CDs or the video, you can send your address and $10 to Steve McCrea at 2455 East Sunrise Blvd., Suite 200, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33304 USA You can make the check to "Talk International." I will send you a sample and then you can decide if you want to buy the full cassette of 20 commercials. The current sample has one commercial from a company in Key West. |
Learn and Laugh(tm) is a trademark of www.teacherstoteachers.com. Learn and Laugh(tm) videos come in two formats: CD videos (using QuickTime software by Apple Computers) and Videotape (VHS half-inch). The special technique breaks a video conversation, TV commercial or other video program into sentences. Each sentence is repeated 3 or 4 times (depending on the level of difficulty). The student is given 8-10 seconds to write the sentence. A typical TV commercial of 30 seconds takes about 3-to-4 minutes to be dictated. These are especially helpful for giving students independent practice in listening (for language laboratory use). For teachers who want to give dictation practice, just stick the video in the VCR and press PLAY. The students have 15 to 20 minutes of dictation practice. Answers are given on a separate paper or available by email. Available: Actual TV commercials Conversations Planned: Segments of TV news and TV situation comedies (in discussion), plus funny videos. Learn more by visiting www.teacherstoteachers.com and click on LEARN AND LAUGH(tm).
