Tie Breakers and Notes

  • Central Divison: won by Barry thanks to better division record. (5-1) to (4-2)
  • Bud's record: Ties count as 1/2 win and 1/2 loss, giving Bud 9.5 wins for the purposes of seeding.
  • Second Seed: AB beat Moses 35-27 in week 6
  • Seventh: JK beat Outlaw 64-48 in week 10

Results are still unofficial.

Two teams that have never captured a division before, rookie Moses and veteran Barry won in week 14 to capture the division and the 10 percent bonus that comes with with. In the East, Deitrich had wrapped up the East the previous week, played to a tie with Outlaw, 60-60. Special reserve kicker Adam Vinatieri accounted for 14 points and Bud closed the gap. The result is the highest scoring tie in league history bettering a 52-52 tie in week 1 of the 1990 season between Jackson and Stroupe. And speaking of 10 team old records involving Stroupe, the tie is Bud's third in five weeks. The three ties matches Stroupe's 1990 total. A favorable note to Bud as he ties himself to history: Stroupe won the league in 1990.

Aside from the records, and most importantly to Bud, is that he's no longer facing Jones-Klingman in the 1-8 game next week. Bud feared "facing a powerful but unlucky team" that week. Instead he gets another round with Outlaw who loses a head to head tiebreaker with JK as both were 6-7-1.

JK will now face Barry who had little trouble with Best in securing the Central division fron hard- charging Ricker. Barry got a strong game from Robert Smith and the SGreen Bay D to win 48-29. An interesting note, Jerry Rice scored twice for Best in what may be the final BRFL points he scores. That does little to ease Best's pain as he misses the playoffs for the first time since 1989.
For JK, picking up four players this week didn't help them to a win. Perhaps the third time will be the charm against AB in week 15.

One week after polishing off the DB's to take the West, Moses will face them again. All three division winners face first round games from a team in their division. Moses got a pair of scores from New Orleans QBs and not a whole lot else. The DB's, have failed to break 30 in thre of their last four games (the exception being a 79 point game). They do insist that the planets will line up again for week 15...

Powerful Ricker roared through the second block of division play 3-0, but his 0-2 start cost him the division. Although they both finished 9-5, Barry went 5-1 in the division while Ricker went 4-2. Ricker started slow this week with just a single touchdown from Daunte Culpepper and nothing from Randy Moss, yet still managed to score over 50 for the 8th time this year. Warrick Dunn and David Boston scored twice.

Wallace slides into the "death slot" against Ricker. Not only does Ricker's power make him nervous, 5 seeds have not dones well in recent years. Last one to win their initial playoff game was was Peil in 1995.

And congratulatiosn to CZ, whereever he is. He has finally ended his losing streak which reached 12 games. He wins his open, and closer and loses the rest in between. The victim was Jackson, who will miss the playoffs for the first time since 1992.

There is very little at stake as barring complete tankings by JK and Outlaw, the 8 teams are known. There are two division bonuses up for grabs: the Central and West. Moses and the DBs will play for the West title. Barry controls his fate for the Central title.

Check it out: 6-0 for the Thanksgiving weekend games! 47-29-2 for the season.

Deitrich (8-3-2) vs Outlaw (6-7)

Bud will welcome the return of Kurt Warner just in time for a tune up prior to the BRFL playoffs. With Warner a already dangerous Bud team is even more scary. Is this his greatest team of them all? The 95 edition that went 14 - 1? That team averaged 47 points a game. The 2000 edition is averaging a whopping 58 points a game. Bud's mission, besides winning first Super Bowl, is to break the season points record set by Mosakowski-Hale. The Mo-ha scored 836 in 1998. Bud is 80 points behind that. Bud has already scored over 80 once this year and has scored 77 twice..

You look at Outlaw's team and you wonder, why isn't he kicking ass? He looks like one of the more powerful teams in the BRFL, and yet he's going to make the playoffs as a points qualifier. However, getting respect won't be easy against long time rival Bud. Bud has won 7 out of 9 meetings. It will soon be 9 out of 11. Bud beat him this week and next.

Wallace (7-5-1) vs Stroupe (5-8)

Stroupe's 1-7 record in his last 8 games is second to CZ in futility. He has an outside chance to sneak in as a points qualifier, but he need to out score JK or Outlaw by 50. Unlikely with Indy playering at the Jets.

Wallace claims that he will "rest his starters for the playoffs". Or maybe we wants to tank this game so that he won;t have to face Ricker in week 15. Unless he starts his Baltimore players (they are on a bye), expect Wally to previal and be on target earn his 100th win in week 15.

Barry (8-5) vs Best (6-6-1)

After this week, Best could be the owner of the only two wide recievers in the NFL to catch 1000 passes. Cris Carter should join Jerry Rice this week. Rice and Carter are also the only receivers ever to catch 100 TD passes. Whether Rice and Carter can offer enough TDs this week to help Best into the playoffs as a points qualifier looks unlikely. He needs to outscore Outlaw by 44 or JK by 53.

Barry is on the verge of winning the division for the first time ever. He was last in his division last season and 3rd in 1998. In his three years when we had no division he was 12th once and 14th twice. It has been a remarkable year. However, expect Abie to stumble this week and have Ricker swoop in and take the division. Cris Carter's 1000th catch goes for a TD and it inspires Best in a huge upset.

Ricker (8-5) vs Jones-Klingman (6-6-1)

Victory is not a priority for JK this week. All they need to do is keep Best and Stroupe in their sights. Victory should elude them early as Ricker gets another Thursday showcase for his Viking combo.

Ricker has been very inpressive in the stretch run: He won 55-44 and 66-59 shootouts with division rivals Barry and Best. Ricker should get out the broom. Whether this give him the division depends on what AB does. What it will give him his momentum to go deep into the playoffs.

Moses (8-5) vs Dahlin-Bethea (7-6)

Who would have thought that the two league rookies would be meeting for a division title. Usually rookies are slight overwhelmed their first year. But we are glad to have them be so successful as they pumped funds into the treasury at record levels: Moses with his trades and DB with their petty squabbles over who to claim (so they claim everyone they can).

Moses will win the Denver/New Orleans QB battle and this game and the West division.

Czupryna (1-12) vs Jackson (5-8-1)

It's the Packers/Bears of the BRFL. Like their NFL counterparts who play this week also, it is meaningless game. Perhaps the most meaningless game in this long long series. With nothing at stake, let's look at some of the more interesting games in the past between these two leather helmet clad warriors:
  • 1998, Playoff bound Jackson is nipped by CZ, 37-36 when Jackson sat Jake Plummer and his 5 TDs.
  • 1997, Jackson is beaten 80-21 - Both CZ's backs Antowain Smith and Mario Bates scored 21 points.
  • 1992, Jackson (the last time he was out of the playoffs) completes a season sweep of CZ, who had the best record in the BRFL at the time.
  • 1986: wk 2, Jackson wins 25-7 as CZ gets a rare 1 TD game from Dan Marino
  • 1965: CZ starts old warhorse Paul Horning, who scores five TDs only to be upstaged by Jackson's flashy rookie Gale Sayers who scores 6 TDs.
  • 1929: CZ spoils Jackson's birthday when Ernie Nevers scores all 40 points in a 40-2 shutdown of Jackson. CJ could only manage a bonus point from Red Grange and a fumble recovery by the Frankford Yellow Jacket Defense.
CZ once won 13 straight. This week he loses his 13th straight. Jackson in a romp.
