Quote
from Stanely Kubrick
"I
tried to create a visual experience, one that bypasses verbalized pigeonholing
and directly penetrates the subconscious with an emotional and philosophical content....I
intended the film to be an intensely subjective experience that reaches the viewer
at an inner level of consciousness, just as music does...You're free to speculate
as you wish about the philosophical and allegorical meaning of the film...."
-Stanley Kubrick, 1968
Review:2001:
A Space Odyssey is unlike any movie I have ever seen. It's a mind-blowing
experience because of the mysterious and unexplained events that occur
throughout the movie. Kubrick (Paths of Glory,
Clockwork Orange, The
Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Eyes
Wide Shut), with a large budget for the time ($10 million),
spent over three years creating this film. The special effects still
work nearly 30 years later. Kubricks use of music is also unconventional
and very powerful....particularly the themes by Johann Johann Strauß
("An der schoenen blauen Donau") and Richard Strauss ("Also
Spracht Zarathustra"). I've read that Arthur C. Clarke, who assisted
on the screenplay, admitted that he wasn't quite sure what the film
was about. -Review by Aaron Caldwell
