Colonel
Dax (Kirk Douglas):
"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel."
Review:An early
Kubrick masterpiece and one of the first antiwar films I have seen, this movie
looks to leadership as a cat looks to a mouse, greedy war pigs playing games with
the death of others, its all just numbers, losses and gains. The ending is very
moving when the men are in the bar listening to the songs of a German girl, she
radiates innocence in a world full of carnage. -Review by Mark Caldwell
Review:
A masterpiece from
Kubrick (2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining, Full Metal Jacket, Clockwork
Orange, Eyes Wide Shut) and one of the
greatest antiwar films ever made. The indifference or disregard of the high command
for the lost lives of their men is captured perfectly in this movie. The final
scene in which the woman is singing at the bar, transcending the battle line,
is unforgettable. Due to the possible impact of this film on other countries armies
and citizens it has been banned in over a dozen countries. Although many regard
Paths of Glory as one of Kubricks best it failed to receive a single Oscar
nomination. -Review by Aaron Caldwell
