DRSMA - The M@Dead List

new Jim Adams Jim Adams Baltimore, Md
Proprietor of the Falls Road Running Center. Publishes a kind'a weekly Baltimore Area Running News via e-mail. Although he runs Baltimore area trails, through 1999 he had yet to hear the mating call of a Certified Wood Seal in Rock Creek Park. Frequently victimized by El Wack and her friends when he saunders south to DC area races, which means he trains and races mostly in Baltimore in order to salvage his ego . Marathon and 10K times are nowhere close to "pace-prediction" performances based on demonstrated mile and 5K times.

Pauline Adamse DV Wageningen, the Netherlands
Software Engineer who used to live in the Washington, DC area. Plans to run until she dies, and then stop.

William J. (Jack) Alspaugh, Jr. New Market, Md
Married with three sons (28,25,12), one Bearded Collie, three cats, two swans, two African Pygmy goats, and many (too many) visiting Canada geese. Does Real Estate. Smoked for 30 years and started running to help me keep off the cigarettes and control my rapidly rising weight. Goal was to finish the 1977 Marine Corps Marathon before everyone has gone home. Finished in 5:21:06.

P. "Scott" Allender Columbia, Md
A physician/researcher in Preventive Medicine who is obsessed with training logs, pace charts, setting goals, fast triathlon transitions, bike hardware and "real beer". I'm a triathlete, prior competitive swimmer, road and mountain biker, downhill and crosscountry skier, whitewater kayaker (I love to run waterfalls).

Ruth Almeida Arlington, Va
Moved to Washington, DC from Boston in the fall of 1994. Non-running interests include (in no particular order): ultimate Frisbee, bike riding, double chocolate milanos, margaritas, the Star Wars trilogy, and Happy Hour.

Dan Anderson Gaithersburg, Md
A Math professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Among his published papers is hidden his real skill, A New Oscillatory Instability in a Mushy Layer During the Solidification of Binary Alloys, which translates into studying mud as it vibrates as being stepped on by a shoe with metal spikes while running trails. Important Stuff! Married to fellow M@Dead, JodI Anderson.

Dave Barrows Camp Hill, Pa
Computer Programmer with a Ph.D in psychology from Nebraska, 1976. Claims not being obsessed about anything.

Debi Bernardes King George, Va
Originally from Illinois, ran track/cc for Drake University (in between beers) off an on; I would quit if they made me run further than an 800 in track, and was the next to last slowest runner for our cross country team - I was afraid of distances. Moved to King George when the Navy stationed me here back in 81. Started to take myself seriously in running right about the time I was 3 months pregnant with my daughter Niki (where I learned the art of negative splitting). I also have a son, and he's the only prodigy that will run with me. PRs include 1-Mile 5:10 (at 41), 17:58 (5k), 37:11 (10k), 29:59 (8k), 1:23:32 (1/2 m), and 3:01 for the marathon (also at age of 40). Occupation: Swim Coach, running coach, and full-time triathlete/runner. Decided to get into Triathlons before I got suckered into doing an Ultra. Goal for 2002 - the Ironman Distance.

John Bingham Memphis, Tenn.
John Bingham Writes the Penguin Chronicles, which are published in Runner's World. The Penguin Brigade is a pet project of John's, who is a Associate Professor, Music Education, Middle Tennessee State University. An injury in 1982 at the thoracic outlet prevented further performance on the trombone, so he switched to running. M@Dead record holder for most meals eaten at Whitey's.

Lisa Brody Columbia, Maryland/New York City, NY
I currently live in NYC, but Columbia is my hometown and I'm often there visiting my parents. When I can, I like to run on Saturday mornings with the Howard County Striders. I've run in two marathons: Athens (Greece) '96 and NYC '97 -- both were amazing!

Will Brown Raleigh, NC
IS Manager for the North Carolina Division of Social Services. Ran the first Marine Corps (then Marine Corps Reserve) Marathon in 1976 for a known reason, then ran all the others since. Ran my first ultra in 1996, the Bull Run 50 miler, after reading the quote that says that racing ends at 26.2 miles, and the ludicrous extreme begins. I liked that. Qualified for the Western States 100 Miler at this year's Umstead 100 Milerace. Ran in the Angeles Crest 100 Mile.

R.L. Bynum Burlington, NC
Cubs logo One of the North Carolina RLs. Looks like the lead singer from AC/DC, and some ice skater. Sports copy editor, Durham (N.C.) Herald-Sun. Helped deliver his second son at home. A long-suffering Chicago Cubs fan, and more importantly a University of North Carolina fanatic. I've have a goal to qualify for Boston before turning 40. My marathon PR is 3:33. Good to see activity on the list again. I was up in Silver Spring for Christmas, but unfortunately it was only during the week, so no chance for a Pierce Mill encounter. A few updates on the above bio: I now live in Hillsborough, N.C. The goal of qualifying for Boston is still there, but obviously didn't happen before I turned 40 since I'm 41. :)

Tom Carr Dallas, Tx
SMU logo A Math professor at Southern Methodist University (SMU) who does Asymptotic & perturbation methods, bifurcation theory and dynamical systems theory, applied to coupled oscillators, lasers instabilities and Josephson-junctions. I enjoy road racing but much prefer x-c and track. I love running the steeplechase on the track. I like races that make me climb over logs and run through streams. If I'm really muddy, tired and maybe bleeding, then it was a good race. Known for grommeting skills. A certified, Texas-style WoodSeal, javelin thrower, and chaos expert.

Former Crab Researcher for the Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, studied blue crab behavior, and various other wet things (fish, shrimp, clams, etc). MCM and JFK 50 Mile veteran and has three young sons at home.

Herb Geller Chevy Chase, MD
Geller photo Herb's professional life is at NIH, as a neurobiologist studying the mechanisms of response to brain injury, including how we might be able to prevent permanent damage from strokes and spinal cord injury. He has been running for over 35 years, having started in Graduate School at Case Western Reserve. He actually misses running in rural NJ, where he lived until 2001. While his ideal running goal is to “be all he used to be”, he's learned to be more realistic goal and "accept the aging body". When he's not working or running, he's hitting up his wine cellar, reading newspapers, and petting cats.

Alison Gittleman Fairfax, Va
A true Brit, I came for a short stay to the US four years ago and still haven't left. I've been running since I discovered the glorious mud of cross-country back in secondary school (that's high school to you) and, although I still miss the English cross-country races, I'm becoming a better road runner each year. Until this year, the longest race I'd ever run was a 10K, but in January, in a fit of madness due to the cold weather, I signed up for the Cherry Blossom 10 mile. I had the race of my life and did 1:19. I'm going to make a concerted effort to run PM on Saturdays, having just converted to a morning runner...with the help of a few Deads.

Michael Goodin Pittsburgh, Pa
Back from his priest training, happily married. Card-carrying member of the M@Dead Western fringe group in Pittsburgh, Pa. Fortunately we do not actually need to be running to maintain membership ;-) Maybe next, uh, er, this year will be my year to get back out on the streets, trails, and hills of Pittsburgh. Living in Pittsburgh, I now how it feels to live in a city where people go crazy over a football team I care nothing about. Long live the Redskins! But living in Washington did give me the skills necessary to live in a city where there is not a professional baseball team ;-)

Chuck Hagner Alexandria, Va

David The Kempster Kemp Welcome, Md
A good ol' farm boy and native Southern Marylander. Also known as the native M@Dead duathlete (I don't tri, I du!). Thinks of the Marathon as more of a "biking distance" :-). Uses training as an excuse to eat more Ben & Jerry's ice cream. Favorite race distance: 5K. Used to share an office at Patents and Trademarks Office with Ralph Young until he moved up North. Now works on Capital Hill, so we can blame him for everything that comes out of Washington!

Jeannette Lampron Woodbine, MD & Vermont
