From on Mon, 16 Jun 2003

Your Jeremiah Cahill and wife Mary Maher were my great great grandparents.
Jas Cahill 26 came on the Forth departed Plymouth on 25 May 1841, with Mary Maher 24 and William, a 3 month old son, and arrived in Melbourne on 19 Sept 1841, with William dying not long after.
Had trouble finding this information as Jeremiah is listed as "Jas" on the shipping records, I'm sure Jeremiah's middle name was James. In total they had 9 children, most of them being born in the Merri Creek/ Pentridge area before they went to Kilmore, and then settled in Mooroopna

From on Fri, 11 Mar 2005, in reply to note I sent Thursday, March 10, 2005

Hello Elizabeth Thank you so much for your response. I really appreciate the time and effort taken to respond to my messages.

>I found a death 5636/1933 CROTHERS JAMES son of LUKE and MARGARET died at REDFERN

Yes, this IS our James. He actually died in Mascot.

> There is a Robert Crothers who wed 1863 to Mary White and lived in Warnambool where 7 children were born up to 1878

Yes, found this family and 7 children's birth records.

> Saml Service Crothers Died at Kiewa 1920 6459 son of Crothers Robert and Elizth Jane SERVICE aged 53 so born about 1867

In a nutshell ~ ~ ~ I have a Robert Crothers, son of Luke Crothers and Margaret (nee Sloan) and brother of our James Crothers, who was born in Ballycross, which is just west of Donaghadee. It has been established that our Crothers family attended the Shore St., Presbyterian Church, Donaghadee.

It has also been established that both James and Robert "went to Australia".
Our James' passage has been found and his brother, Robert, does not appear on the shipping list. Therefore, Robert "went to Australia" at some time and it is possible that he returned to Ireland.

There are TWO Robert Crothers, either MAY or may NOT be our Robert:
1) Robert Crothers who married in 1863 to Mary White and lived in Warnambool and produced 7 children
2) Robert Crothers born in 1831 in Co. Down, who married Eliza Jane Service in 1857 in Shore Street Presbyterian Church, Donaghadee.

What I am trying to ascertain here, is, whether either of the above are indeed our Robert.

This LDS record shows both Robert Crothers and Eliza (nee Service) died in Ireland. We have found a possible burial for Robert Crothers:
Crothers buried in "Graves in Newtownards and Donaghadee" - [Ref. "Inscriptions on Graves in Co. Down"]. Robert 68, 1900 - therefore born about 1832.

We have also found:
"Robert Crother" (sic) "29,single,Irish lab., who arrived Melb, 10 June 1861 onboard "David G. Fleming" ex L'pool Feb 28th 1861." [Therefore Robert was born about 1832 - which fits OUR Robert and also fits YOUR Robert, who married Eliza Jane Service.

Two records appear (Assisted British Immigration - Index to Registers of Assisted British Immigrants 1839-1871) for Eliza Crothers (arrival in Victoria): Eliza Crothers, aged 30, arrived per "Ocean Home", 30/8/1860
Eliza Crothers, aged 31, arrived per "Ocean Home", 30/8/1860
The above entries may possibly be for the same person.

It COULD be that Robert and Eliza came to Australia separately and subsequently returned to Ireland. TheIr children were born from 1864 to 1867 in DONAGHADEE.

I was hoping to ascertain whether Robert above, of interest to you, was the son of Luke and Margaret Sloan. That is why I asked if you knew the parents of your Robert Crothers.

Their youngest son, Samuel Service Crothers, born in 1867 Donaghadee, migrated to Australia and married Mary Eliza Colville in 1889 in Victoria.
I have not as yet tried to find Samuel's entry into Australia, but, this would have been prior to 1889.

Further Crothers buried in "Graves in Newtownards and Donaghadee" - [Ref. "Inscriptions on Graves in Co. Down"].
