1975 EUROPEAN FINAL

The first European final saw nine athletes converge at the Ahoy Stadium in Rotterdam to crown the Superstars champion. The winners of the five heats (Hemery replacing Ties Kruize, Macdonald, Schenk, Drut & Isaksson) were automatic qualifiers. The host nation was allowed two entrants, Kuipers was invited as the runner-up in Sweden. Each of the five hosting nations was guaranteed an entry, so Alfons Brijdenbach qualified as the runner-up in the Spanish heat. Spain was guaranteed an entry, and Jody Scheckter, fourth in Belgium with 38 points, was the top Spanish representative even though he was a South African residing in Spain. Scheckter was unable to attend, so the next best Spaniard was Mariano Haro with 21 1/2 points in his fifth place finish in the Spanish heat. Haro was in the finals even though fourteen men who were not invited to the finals had higher point totals. The final qualifier was the top scorer from the nations which did not host a round, Germany auto racer Jochen Mass who tied for second in Sweden with 45 points.

In the finals, five of the nine men were from track and field, so they were allowed to enter the 100 meters and the 600 meter steeplechase with handicaps. The opening event was the 100 meters, and a four meter handicap was given to Hemery and Isaksson, giving the rest of the field only 96 meters to run. Even without the handicap, Malcolm Macdonald would have beaten everyone, but his 10.7 seconds over 96 meters could not qualify as a record. The two Dutch speed skaters faced off in the bike race final, held on the banked track in the Ahoy Stadium. Kuipers handed Schenk his first Superstars cycling loss. Isaksson used the strength of his medicine ball toss to edge Hemery in the gym tests. Mass won the swimming to nobody's surprise and Schenk ended the first day by winning the shooting.

Rowing was one of just two events held outside the Ahoy, and Isaksson won the event to move into the lead. Brijdenbach finally had a good event by beating Isaksson in the tennis final. Schenk's massive shots won the soccer penalty event to move him into a tie for the lead with Isaksson. With two events left, Hemery was five points off the lead and Mass seven points down. Isaksson wrapped things up by winning the weightlifting without any real competition. Hemery and Schenk were still battling for second entering the steeplechase. Isaksson took the event, while Hemery fell into the water pit on the final lap. Hemery scrambled to his feet and raced to the line just behind Kuipers in third place. As soon as the crossed the line, Hemery's ankle had swollen to twice the size and he was taken to the hospital, missing the awards ceremony. Hemery had no break, but badly torn ligaments.
