This page will contain a little of this and a little of that. If anyone has anything to contribute let me know.

We have some mountain lore here in Georgia. I'm interested in knowing if anyone else has this type of thinking. Here are some of the weather forecasting tools we use. We think they are pretty darn reliable, too.

Most Popular: If almost all of the cows in the herds are lying down, there is going to be a very big storm. In the winter, that means a lot of snow..in the summer, a thunderstorm with tornados.

The reasoning behind this is the cows are conserving energy for the storm, hence they lie down. We had a recent snow storm and even though it was 65 degrees the day before, all the cows we passed were lying down. Sure enough, the very next morning, we had 6" of snow.

Wooly Worms: These are furry little caterpillars that are normally brown. If it is going to be a frigid winter, they turn black on both ends. It works.

Nesting insects: If you see insect nests in the trees (they are not hard to miss) early, it will be a long winter. This is also true. If they start in July or August, we know we are in for a long cold winter. This year, I didn't see any until November. We will see.

Snow: If snow sits on the ground for more than 3 days, there will be more to follow. Well, this last snow sat for 3 days or more and we expect 7 snow storms this February. *NOTE: The first week of February we had 6-8" of snow..this sat for 5 days. The weather girl predicted flurries and a light dusting, but I KNEW BETTER. The day before, the cows were lounging on the ground! UPDATE: no more real snow to speak of this February...but some of the cows are still refusing to get up.
