Eudey/Endey

From on Mon, 22 Dec 2003

Elizabeth,
Is it possible for me to add some details to the person listed as Edward Endey?
I am a descendant and would like to correct and add some details to the man who was born and died as Edward Eudey. Half of his children are listed as Endey, probably because shipping lists are spelt this way.
Regards
Rob Smith

Thanks to Rob's clue, I have found the Victorian Pioneer Index lists Edward and Mary 9 times, spells her surname Leaher, Lecher and Letcher, Robert has Endey used twice.

William Eynon

There is no known connection to Thomas Eynon wed 1858 to Lydia Richards
The Index reads - Marriages Jun 1849 William Eynon and Mary Ann Miller Stepney Vol 2 page 463
The copy of Marriages in the Registration district of Stepney, shows the wedding was on 8 April 1849, in the parish church of St Anne's Limehouse, after Banns, between William Eynon, of full age, a batchelor, Mariner of Limehouse, son of Thomas Eynon, a farmer
and Mary Ann Miller, of full age, a Spinster of Limehouse, dau of John Miller, dead.
In the presence of Thomas Lee and Charlotte Osborn

St Anne's Limehouse Notes from Limehouse and St Annes, image from here
The dedication of the church to St. Anne is said to have been suggested as a compliment to Queen Anne. The foundation-stone was laid in 1712, and the edifice was completed in 1724, but was not consecrated until September 1730 - that is, after the formation of the parish. It was built of Portland stone, and designed by Nicholas Hawksmoor, who was Christopher Wren's most talented pupil. The splendid Baroque church, probably Hawksmoor's most dramatic creation, was built between 1714 - 1725 in what were then open fields. The immense size of the church is a reflection on the importance of Limehouse. Its great tower soon became a landmark for ships using the East End docks. The clock tower is the second highest in Britain after Big Ben and was built by the same makers.
On 8 April 1849 there was a wedding - joining Mary Ann Miller and William Eynon after banns. This was Easter Sunday and was followed by cold weather, a great snowstorm hit Southern England, example on 19 April 1849 the Westerham coach was buried in a drift.
On the morning of Good Friday, 29 March 1850, at seven o'clock, the church was discovered to be on fire and the whole neighbourhood was aroused by the ringing of the bells giving the alarm, but owing to the shortage of water little could be done to save the body of the building. In three hours there was nothing left standing but the tower. Whilst the building was being restored the interior was 'Victorianized' by the architect Philip Hardwick.

Mary Ann Eynon died 1836 - 1875 #14539 aged 39 appears to be the mother of Mary Ann Eynon who wed 1885 to William Cowie.

I have just received a Burial record from the Registrar BDM, This shows that a child, Christopher Alfred GYNON (the name should be EYNON) of Lane Cove, late London, aged 4 years and 10 months, was accidentally drowned on 16 Feb 1855. The burial took place the next day in the Parish of Willoughby, by W B Clarke, Church of England.

Dated Thu, 24 Feb 2005, William EYNON and his family arrived under the Family Colonization Loan Society scheme in 1855, a society promoted by Caroline Chisholm.

Dated Mon, 12 Sep 2005

Hello folks, This is hard for me to confess, but I have realised just now that despite having my ancestor William EYNON's death certificate since 1976, I don't think I've even wondered where he was buried. But now I do.

The chronology of the family that I have to date is: 1855 Arrived and went to The Fig Tree (probably near Lane Cove) 1856 Child is drowned, abode Lane Cove, buried St Thomas' Cemetery 1856 Child born, where not known 1858 Child born in Lane Cove 1860 Child born in Sussex St, Sydney 1862 Child born in Benevolent Asylum, Sydney 1864 Father injured at Brisbane Water 1864 Father died in Sydney Infirmary

William EYNON's death certificate called him HEENAN. It recorded nothing about his burial. He died at the Sydney Infirmary after a horrific accident at Brisbane Water, where he had his leg crushed between two logs of wood. There was no medical assistance at the Brisbane Water, so he was brought to Sydney and died a few days later from the effects of gangrene. This occurred in October 1864. Where would I look for a burial?

On Sat, 31 Mar 2007 Lenore wrote
Who am I? I am an inmate of the Kew Asylum in 1882.
I am female.
I was born in London (or Middlesex) some time in the 1820s or 1830s.
I am married.
I have a married sister who is also an inmate of Kew Asylum at this time. (I don't know her name either.) I had another sister who died in the Yarra Bend Asylum (Mary Ann Eynon nee MILLER admitted Feb 6, 1866 and on 12 Nov 1875 died)
I have a niece who was admitted to this Asylum in 1882 (Page 222 (417 counting each side), Sarah EYNON admitted 11 May 1882, aged 19, a Servant living at Emerald Hill, Baptist, signed in by MA Eynon (sister), discharged on 16 Feb 1884)

I have two nephews (Joseph and William EYNON) born in Sydney 1856 and 1858. They are living at the moment in Fitzroy. I have a niece (Mary Ann EYNON) who is a domestic servant in South Melbourne at the moment, but in 1885 will marry a neighbour, William COWIE.

My sister Mary Ann's father was John MILLER. Mary Ann married William EYNON at St Anne's Church, Limehouse, Stepney in 1849. They emigrated to NSW a few years later.

In the 1851 Census my sister Mary Ann EYNON (husband at sea) was living with her mother, Hannah MORLONEY (a widow), and Hannah had two other children in the household - Ellen and John Morloney, aged 11 and 8.

My maiden name might be MILLER, or it might be MALONEY. Or even something else.

Who the heck am I?

We are two sisters, born in London or Middlesex.
In the 1841 Census we were living with our parents in Glass House Field, Tower Hamlets, Stepney. The household was listed as follows:
Patrick Maloney aged 40, Ballast Getter, born in Ireland b. abt 1801
Ann Maloney, aged 40, born in Ireland b. abt 1801
Mary Maloney, aged 16, not born in the county b. abt 1825
Elizabeth Maloney, aged 12, born in the county b. abt 1829
Johannah Maloney, aged 11, born in the county b. abt 1830
Patrick Maloney, aged 6, born in the county b. abt 1835
Ellen Maloney, 10 months, born in the county b. abt 1840

Our elder sister Mary was our mother's daughter by an earlier marriage to John MILLER, and she was also known as Mary Ann MILLER. We're not sure if our father was Patrick MALONEY or John MILLER, so our maiden name might be either MALONEY or MILLER.

By 1851 the household had changed. Our father, or stepfather, had died, and our mother was the head of the household. They were living at 16 Wapping Dock Street, St John of Wapping.

Hannah MORLONEY, head, widow, aged 52, washerwoman, born Ireland
Mary ENING, daughter, married, aged 26, wife of mariner, born MDX, Wapping
Ellen MORLONEY, daughter, aged 11, scholar, born MDX, Wapping
John MORLONEY, son, aged 8, scholar, born MDX, Wapping

Our sister Mary Ann MILLER married a seaman named William EYNON at the St Anne, Limehouse parish church in 1849. In the 1851 Census she was living with our mother awaiting the birth of twins. Mary Ann and William EYNON later emigrated to Sydney with the surviving twin. William died from an accident in Sydney, and his wife and children came to Melbourne.

One of Mary Ann's Australian-born daughters, Sarah EYNON, was admitted to the Kew Asylum in 1882, and her records showed that "Her two aunts are current inmates of this asylum."

However, our names are never given. We assume we are married, and our first names are either Elizabeth, Johannah or Ellen, or some variant. Our maiden name is either MILLER or MALONEY. In 1882 we are aged about 53, 52 or 42.

In 1879 our sister Mary Ann EYNON died in the Yarra Bend Lunatic Asylum, and her "two brothers-in-law" had been to visit her shortly before. We assume this refers to our husbands (as William has no relatives in the colony.)

Who are we? Are we one of your female ancestors? If so, please advise our sister's gt gt granddaughter, who hasn't been able to work out who we are.
